Materials: Cotton String, Fallen Branches
This work is a continuation of site-specific research within forested sites of trauma. GPS data collected in the forests of Eastern Poland in 2019, measure distances between witness trees (trees identified in these sites as being of an age to have witnessed the murders). The gps information was then measured in cotton string, cut to these lengths, rendering an 1:1 measure of the site. Using google maps made in Poland in 2019, the source data maps a distant location, while local forms assemble a new representation of this place.
These works recognize ecology as a way of telling the stories of the shoah, while also provoking questions about the utility and function of artworks as counter-maps.
