repurposed granite slabs

Site Repair is a counter monument that was conceived in commemoration of Anna Leonowens, who was one of the founders of the National Council of Women of Canada. This project returns a defunct monument - once erected to commemorate the surrounding historic architecture - to street level by repurposing the existing materials - large granite slabs. The new centre stone is inscribed with a quote by Leonowens that reads in a continuous circle, leaving it up to the viewer to choose how they read it – “There is compensation in all things” or “In all things there is compensation” are possibilities. The project arose from questions of representation of colonial figures within public space.
